hit a patch of ice and broke a bumper and dented a fender on a car i borrowed from a friend the day i forgot to bring my license, probably eventually effectively doubling my travel expenses for the entire year. (oops)

This sounds made up, but it really happened that when I met a guy for a first time (in a position of authority!)
